i refuse plastic bags and i carry my own reusable bags and tell everyone i know about reducing plastic and finding creative ways to reuse anything we can! i also blog about my “green progress” and the steps i’m taking to reduce in all aspects of my life – i try to spread the word that way as well!

hello, beth. i met you today at the farmer’s market and i am really liking this site! how did you hear about okkerville river? they are a favorite texas band (i’m from the tx) and my fiance and i saw them perform on our first date. to stretch mark mama… i believe i know the grocery store chain you refer to, and I think i will call and ask them the same thing… what a simple act, but hey, if enough customers called with the same feedback… who knows?

Will! Glad to see your head out of your shell. Don't get mesmerized by plastic bags and swallow them like a leatherback turtle.

To everyone, I love that there are people out there "sticking their necks out" and willing to look silly or annoying to express their convictions.

When I find myself worried that I may be venturing into annoying territory, I remind myself of how annoying Michael Moore can be, and I feel a lot better. If there weren't any annoying people, nothing would ever change!

I would enjoy and participate in a discussion blog whether or not it was on a weekend or a weekday.

On an entirely different subject, I emailed you to tell you that the San Francisco Hilton hotel had eliminated garbage disposals in its kitchens & how great I thought that was until I thought a little longer and realized that restaurants generally don't have garbage disposals.

PS: I base the above statement rather wildly on the fact that 30 years ago I worked in a restaurant in England and it didn't have a garbage disposal. Back then, hardly anyone had a shower in their home, either. and mixer taps were considered state-of-the-art.

I refuse bags of any kind at stores if I can carry the items out in my arms/purse. One of the clerks told me “Mother Earth thanks you and I thank you.” It was pretty cool.

I posted yesterday about the steel cans shaving gel comes in (I know not plastic). I called the manufacturer and explained it’s not recyclable here and if not here likely not in many places in the country. I shared this experience as well as reducing my plastic bags, etc. with my co-workers. They get to hear it whether they like it or not :)

I work at a retail store and I'm sure to ask every time if they actually need a bag for that 1 item. Then when they have a lot of items I always condense as much into one bag as possible.

Spread the word to my family and friends too! (No one I work with takes plastic bags for a few items anymore, only when they can't carry it in their hands!)

I recently e-mailed our local grocery store chain (about 10-15 stores total) and asked if they would cut back on their packaging in the produce section. They sit a lot of their fresh veggies (broccoli, zucchini, turnips, etc.) on styrofoam plates and wrap them up in plastic. I heard back and they said they would consider the idea. I am still waiting to see if anything changes! :)
