Think we can't live without plastic? Think again. In 2007 I committed to stop buying any new plastic & I've almost succeeded! Won't you join me? Let's see what plastic-free looks like in 2012... for the health of our bodies, our oceans, our planet. ~Beth Terry

Hi Cynthia. I doubt that the container is hazardous just to have around if it's not holding food. But just remember that it's PVC and don't put it in your regular recycling at the end of its life.

(Of course, I'm not a scientist, so that's just my gut feeling.)

Hi Beth, thanks for continuing to illuminate and educate. After reading your blog about PVC plastic, I went through my cupboards and realized that not only is my enormous Sam's club container of animal crackers not recyclable, it is also made of pvc! I emailed the Stauffer company about the dangers of the plastic, and I won't buy it again but I am in a quandary about what to do with the thing! I could use it forever to store things in (not food items), but is it hazardous just to have around? I can't find the post about #3 plastic to read the details, but I remember something about fumes, etc. If you have any thoughts, please let me know!

I had the same thought. How can something so awful look so pretty? And yet the dark spots also remind me of cancer.

I gasped at your first photo of the oil floating on the water. It was eerily beautiful. Not that I want oil spills to happen!

I was thinking about running some errands today, but I will wait until tomorrow when I have to take the car out anyway to carpool the kids to school. Thanks for the reminder.
