When Life Insists on a Time Out

by Beth Terry

I came down with the flu a week ago. I tried very hard to keep on blogging, keep up with my job, and arrange for the final Take Back The Filter event to deliver our 611 collected Brita filters to Clorox on Friday. But working through fever and chills is not a good idea. After dropping off the filters to Whole Foods in Oakland on Friday morning, I came home and slept for 24 hours straight. But things are still not right.

I’ve been dealing with tingling, numbness, and weakness all over for several days now, with no sign of abatement. I’ve got another appointment at Kaiser tomorrow (Monday) morning (I saw the doctor this past Wednesday, too) and hopefully we’ll get it sorted out. In the meantime, I’m going to take a break from everything that is not absolutely essential for my survival. I hope I’ll be blogging again very soon. But at this point, I really don’t know.

Oh, speaking of Kaiser, I noticed on Wednesday that the SF Office is using compostable bin liners in their public bathroom waste cans and has signs up on the wall indicating that paper towel waste will be composted. I guess it’s not considered medical waste since it’s a public restroom. What do you think?

Okay, had to get that last plastic-related tid-bit in there. Until whenever… please skip the plastic!

  2. I’ll bet I’m speaking for everyone who reads FPF when I write that I’m sorry to know you’re so sick and wish I could help you feel better. If there’s any way I can make it happen, let me know.

  4. Funny, my cousins and I were just discussing this very subject. Sometimes your body just says, “Okay, now it’s time to take a break.” It’s usually a pretty good idea to listen when it starts to scream take a break! Hope you feel better.

  12. Take care of yourself. At my work we can compost paper towels, but only in the lunchroom. The ones used in the bathroom are considered some sort of biohazard. So, I guess it depends on the company doing the composting?

  14. dear beth,
where is the numbness and tingling? hands, feet, face? GO TO THE DOCTOR! be sure to tell him/her you started with a “flu” virus 7 or so days ago and describe the numbness and tingling. these symptoms are very similar to those when my husband came down with “gbs”, guillain barre syndrome.
    take care of yourself!

  20. Hope you are feeling better soon. I had a horrible case of the flu last winter. I did not get out of bed for a week. Then it took me two to three weeks to get my strength back. Liguid fever reducer/pain relievers can be helpful if it hurts to swallow pills.

  26. Feel better, Beth! An empty cup quenches no one’s thirst. If we don’t take care of ourselves, we can’t give to anyone else – including the planet.
