Dear Planet Earth, Are you sad? Or am I just anthropomorphizing again?

Dear Planet Earth,

How are you? I am fine. Well, not exactly fine. I stay up late at night blogging. About you. Sometimes with a glass of organic wine. I’m kind of obsessed with you, actually. Wondering if you’re doing okay. If you’re sad about how we drill into you to fill up our cars, cut down your trees to wipe our butts, remove your mountain tops to keep our lights burning, and pump noxious gases into your atmosphere. Does it piss you off that massive areas of your oceans are filled up with our bottle caps, cigarette lighters, and cheap plastic toys, that coral is dying and beaches are washing away?

A lot of people have ideas about how to save you: recycling batteries, turning the lights off for an hour, or not turning off the lights, watching a movie, carrying our own bags, etc. There are even iPhone Apps to Help Save the Planet. Do these things make you happy?

And will you still be our BFF? We’re giving up buying new plastic and reducing what we send to the landfill each week. We ride our bikes to the store and buses and trains to work. You like that, right? We drink from the tap and eat from the local farmer’s market. I know I don’t spend enough time quality time with you, but that’s because I’m busy running around picking up trash!

Planet Earth, can you hear me? Or am I just talking to myself? Because sometimes I wonder if you actually care about any of this at all. I mean, in the long run, you will still be around after all of us humans are gone. We can destroy whole ecosystems and ruin every last livable space, but your plates will continue their tectonics, mountains will shift, and tides ebb and flow as you travel your habitual orbit around the sun. Finally, the sun will die, taking you with it. But until then, will you miss us?

After all, we do some pretty amusing things. Like creating a white trash wedding out of plastic grocery bags, throwing a party to celebrate pee, playing Matzah Frisbee, or rowing across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans to learn Zen acceptance. Often, we do these things with such fervent sincerity that you must ripple with laughter from time to time. Is that what earthquakes are? Like how I topple my kitties onto the bedroom floor when their cuteness is too intense for me to lie still?

Also, Planet Earth, besides being amusing, we humans really care. We care so much that learning about some of the destruction we’ve caused brings a few of us to our knees. We care that sea birds and turtles and fish die from eating plastic, mistaking it for food, and that our children are exposed to toxic chemicals in their tubs. We care about suffering happening on the planet right now and suffering yet to come. Because for us humans, caring is what we do.

Planet Earth, we are the caring part of you.

So am I actually writing this letter to myself? Probably. Once, I thought I heard you answer, but then I realized it was only the sound of my own breath.

Sincerely yours,

Beth Terry, aka Fake Plastic Fish

Beth, I sure have been enjoying your blog as I explore more and more of your previous posts. It sure is easy to become overwhelmed and I really appreciate your addressing that topic as well. If our only choices are transform immediately or give up, it's easy to see which direction we will tend toward. I like Clif's comment too. As we do all we can to preserve what we have here, there seems to be some sort of mental balance between caring and being educated, yet not falling into despair. What you are doing is so important. Thanks for shedding light on what is going on, and giving people the tools to make changes.

Simply, "progress", so-called, is destroying the earth(land, air, water, vegetation, creatures) and perverting that which is Spirit(Light, Life, Truth, Love, Peace, Hope, Grace, Miracles, Faith, etc.) ;-(Postings have been made at TheDestructionOfTheEarth.Wordpress.com concerning such destruction and perversion and also concerning The Creator's(GOD, Father) promise that HE will "destroy those who destroy the earth(HIS Creation)!" (Rev11:18c)Yet there is a Living, Lively Hope! However, such Hope is not for that which is of the earth, earthly and fleshly, but there is a Living, Lively Hope for that which is Spirit, Heavenly and Spiritual.Hope for that which is Spirit is Alive because "progress", which is the product of mankind's "imag"ination, can pervert, yet not destroy that which is Spirit! For that which is Spirit is Real, and that which is Real is Forever! So no matter how perverse this world's systems of religion become, that which is Spirit can only be abused and perverted, not destroyed! That which is Spirit is Eternal.......As for that which is called "religion". "Pure religion and undefiled before GOD The Father(Creator) is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself uncontaminated by the world." (James 1:27)Simply, every other religion is impure and defiled! As stated previously, "that which is called ""progress" is of mankind's "imag"ination and can pervert, yet not destroy, that which is Spirit", and so it is that this world, and it's systems of religion, have their version of "Light", which can be turned on and off;Their version of "Truth", which is of the "imag"ination;Their version of "Love", which should be called lust;Their version of "Peace", which needs be enforced;Their version of "Hope", which is but a desire for temporal "things";Their version of "Faith", which is powerless;Their version of "Grace", which is the liberty to "do your own thing";And sadly, the favorite color of this world's religion is gray ;-(So come out of the shadows! And as is said by many, "Get Real"!Once again, "only that which is Spirit is Real, and only that which is Real is Forever"!Hope is there would be those who "see" that The Life is in and of The Spirit. Those who "see" will no longer have their portion with the multitudes who are destroying the earth(and, air, water, creatures, vegetation) and perverting that which is Spirit(Light, Life, Truth, Love, Peace, Hope, Faith, Grace, etc.) ;-(Simply, each breath(Spirit) you take is a revelation of The Source of Life. And "A Simple and Spiritual Life is the only Life that will survive!"Forever.......So "set your affections on Heavenly things" and be not of those "whose god is their bellies because they mind earthly things". Be not of those who "love this world and it's things" and who are "progress"ively destroying the earth(land, air, water, vegetation, creatures) and perverting that which is Spirit(Light, Life, Truth, Love, Peace, Hope, Faith, Grace, etc.).......Peace, in spite of the dis-ease(no-peace) that is of this world and it's systems of religion, for "The WHOLE world is under the control of the evil one" (1John5:19) indeed and Truth.......Truth is never ending....... Beth, you're inspirational, perhaps a bit over the top but I probably say that cuz I'm jealous of your energy. Because of your blog I have become even more aware of the plastic we use just for convenience, those thin bags at the grocery store I used to put my organic apples in are a thing of the past.I have a very long way to go but awareness is the 1st step and you keep me very aware. Thanks!

This was amazing! It's so frustrating isn't it, to think we aren't doing enough for our planet and it is worse knowing not everybody tries to care for it the way we should. I love your blog and am glad to have found it. Very inspirational.Blessed Be ***)O(***

I am so addicted to your blog! I just read that same article from Best Life last night!! You are inspiring me to look at my plastic consumption more closely and eliminate more an more. I am currently working on plastic that lasts under 1 day to 1 month only and I am blogging about it over at Peaceful Daily and my site too. I think you are my new hero! What are your thoughts about eliminating paper towels (b/c the come wrapped in plastic) and using rags for all my toddler's spills? I live not too far from you in Marin and, as you know, we have an H2O shortage. I would have to rinse them out all day. Which is worse? Thanks!

Beth, Earth here.To me, all life is like a...let me think of something you humans would understand...like a kidney stone! Pretty painful but it will pass.I appreciate your anthropomorphisation. To be honest, I envy you because you can act while I just keep spinning around the sun. I don't even have any control over my own body, what with all the quakes and belches (volcanoes) I'm like a teen with lots of pimples that won't go away.Don't forget I was once a barren place and life transformed me into the blue and green thing I am now, so I owe my face-lift to the process that brought you.Looking at your situation, all I can say is you are the latest of a long line of dominant species I've seen and if you disappear it won't be a first. There is a special pathos about you guys, however, since you are the first who seem to be able to understand what you do, at least some of you do, but yet as a whole group you keep on racing along without much direction. What keeps my interest is watching you to see if your intelligence really will make any difference to your fate. Those dinosaurs were sure stupid but they hung on for quite a while. If you want to avoid despair, just think about how life will go on even if your group doesn't. I'm wondering myself which life-form might be the next to take charge...those dolphins are smart and they could develop legs. Even if you might not see it, I will!So don't take yourselves too seriously. At least many of you are having fun and have freed yourselves from disease and hunger and that is a big improvement over your past. You live in a country of 300 million and are at peace with each other. That's amazing! So good luck and thanks for the message.Earth

Hi Beth,Planet Earth does not need us. We are merely temporary custodians. The good changes we make are for selfish self-preservation reasons and for our fellow creatures.

Beautiful. It's very rare that something can make you laugh out loud then make you cry, do it over again and then make you think. Well Done!

this was beautiful. Thank you! Being a big sap it brought a few little tears to my eyes...Because I love Earth and her beauty and sometimes I wonder if there is a point to all the efforts that we are doing...Reading this reaffirmed that I'm not alone in this sea of petroleum.Blessings to you,Lisa
