Think we can't live without plastic? Think again. In 2007 I committed to stop buying any new plastic & I've almost succeeded! Won't you join me? Let's see what plastic-free looks like in 2012... for the health of our bodies, our oceans, our planet. ~Beth Terry

Thank you all for your good work! Heather, you are the winner of the LunchBots Eco. Sorry it took me so long to award the prize. This was one more thing in the huge pile by my desk, which I mentioned in today's post (http://fakeplasticfish.com/2009/10/no-impact-man-book-discussion-chapters-2-3/), so I will be very happy to send it to you and have one less thing on my "to do" list. :-)

Hi Emily. I'll look into the coating on the top of the container. I'll ask Jaqueline about it. But just to be clear: I do buy some durable things that contain plastic. The sticker on an apple gets thrown away, and as small as it is, adds to the waste stream. The powder coating on a stainless steel container is not trash. I do have plastic parts on my travel mug, and I do have a soda maker made of plastic parts which will save thousands of plastic bottles of the course of its life. My cell phone is plastic. My computer monitor is plastic. I guess what I'm saying is that when it comes to durable items, I look for the least plastic possible and try to only buy what I truly need.

Also, just to be clear to everyone -- the powder coating is just on the top of the lid. The inside is plain stainless steel. So the coating is not in contact with the food.

Thanks for bringing up this issue. I'll ask her about it.

Hello Beth,
I am writing about the LunchBots - I do think that they are an excellent product and I am considering buying one. However, I am in the eng/mfg field and know that the Powder Coat paint is plastic. I don't like how the website states that their product is 100% plastic free.
I personally, would buy these because I would want to support the move towards not wholley made of plastic. However, I wanted to bring this up because I know you avoid even the tinyest amount of plastic like a sticker on an apple.

Hi Beth,

President Obama's contribution to the stewardship of the Ocean & Great Lakes is most welcome. In truth, this problem of sea (and shore) contamination is a worldwide issue, including here in the UK.

American can take a lead in this effort and show the better approach to waste handling. Throwaway is not a choice.

I know this won't count as an entry, but I just want to say THANK YOU for having a blog giveaway that requires entrants to actually do something that matters, rather than pointless stuff, like just tweet every day for up to 20 entries and that sort of thing.
