Graze Organic Reusable Lunch and Snack Baggies

by Beth Terry

11/26/09: The winner of the Graze organic lunch bags is: school teacher Cynthia. I’ll have another lunch-related give-away next week, so stay tuned.

Another day; another give-away. I told you there would be more from the SF Green Festival.

Graze Organics

As my roommate at the BlogHer conference this past summer, Mindful Momma Micaela Preston brought me a cute organic cotton sandwich bag from Graze Organic. Unlike other sandwich and snack wraps, these bags contain no plastic coating or lining. Of course, you can’t put anything seriously messy inside (unless you wrap it first in wax paper), but it was important to the founders of the company not to have their children’s food in contact with plastic. In fact, the only plastic in the bags are the Velcro strips that keep them closed.

In addition to containing very little plastic, the bags are made from 100% organic cotton, hand silk screened with soy-based inks, and manufactured in the USA. And they contain words and brightly colored pictures of the foods that can go in each one.

Graze Organic produces cute cloth napkins as well.

Graze Organics

So I was happy to see that Heather and Leslie, the founders of Graze Organic, had a booth at the Green Festival this year.

Graze Organics

I asked them about their inspiration for creating the company and their feelings about plastic. This is what Leslie wrote back:

Hi Beth,

It was so nice to meet you as well!! We have been huge fans of your site for a couple of years now.
We would love to do a giveaway!! Sandwich, veggie & snack sounds great. I came across your site two years ago after I read an article in the Los Angeles Times about BPA. I have two children and immediately trashed all my tupperware. I then moved on to reading about plastic in landfills and how it affects our soil, water and oceans.

The Great Garbage Patch still keeps me up at night!! About 2 1/2 years ago my friend Heather (we’ve known each other since our kids were in nursery school. They are now 12 yr. olds) were on the phone talking about how we despised packing plastic baggies in our kids lunches. We were packing twelve baggies a day (we have four kids between us) We literally designed the bags over the phone. Heather can sew, so she made up a bag out of muslin. I am a former pre school teacher, so I thought… why not write the words of the contents for early reading skills for younger children. I can’t tell you how many people (to this day!!) say, “You should line them in plastic, so they are more useful.” For us it has never been an option. We were spending the extra money to buy organic fruits and vegetables for our kids and then sticking them in PLASTIC!!!

It’s been an amazing journey so far. We only launched our site in July and have gotten so much support!! People love what we’re doing. You are our hero and we would be honored to have our name on your site. Can’t wait. Let us know who wins and we will send a set off right away. Thanks for the opportunity, Beth!!

Warmest regards,
Heather & Leslie

Awesome.

For a chance to win one set of three lunch bags with the words “Sandwich,” “Veggie,” and “Snack” printed on them, Leslie would like you to leave a comment letting her know what specific foods you would pack in each bag. How simple is that? I’ll choose a winner by the middle of next week, and Graze Organic will ship your bags directly to you.

While we can’t buy our way out of the environmental mess we have created, supporting companies that are trying to do the right thing is important. Please check out their site and let them know what you think.

  4. OOh this one is easy. I usually take leftovers for lunch in glass containers but I have struggled with providing a waste free and plastic free lunch for my son. So peanut butter and banana sandwich, strawberries and carrots (or other seasonal fruit and veggies combo), and homemade granola.

  6. I would love to have these bags! I bring breakfast, lunch and snacks to work every day and the bags would be a great conversation starter in our lunch room. I already have my co-workers saving money and eating healthier but they use a lot of disposable wrappings so the bags would further demonstrate the benefits of “byo”!
    Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!

  8. I wouldn’t even use wax paper. I would let them get messy and sticky and throw them in the wash. So for my lunch I would put a veggie humus wrap in the sandwich bag (wraps help contain some leakage), some jerky (veggie or animal) in the snack bag and some apple slices in the veggie bag. Beautiful bags!

  14. OOOOH i want them!!

“Sandwich” – would love to say it would be something like avocado and bean sprouts – but most likely is PB & J on whole wheat or roast beef and provolone.. man i’m hungry.

“Veggie” – baby carrots is a good bet. hummus would prob get a bit messy in a cotton bag.

“Snack” – maybe raisins, trail mix, nuts, peanut M&M’s? Maybe I’ll just mix it all together!

I’m starvin! I wish I had a Graze Organics bag to put my lunch in!!!!

As for what ‘d place in these bags, these are my thoughts: “sandwhich”–their favorite of peanut butter, honey and bananas on whole weat or pita; “snack”–veggie booty; and “vegetables”–carrots, grape tomatoes, celery and/or kirbies. 22. These are adorable! We’ve been trying to find something like this–at least to hold us over until we learn how to sew well enough to make our own…

If I had these on a morning as random and leftover-driven as most mornings, I might pack a sandwich of leftover sliced lima-bean loaf (originally cooked in the solar oven) on homemade sourdough bread with homegrown sprouts and wasabi mayonnaise. The veggie bag might have celeraic sticks from the garden–and in the snack bag a combo of dried fruits and nuts.

    I love Mike’s milkshake idea!

As to what would most likely be packed…
Sandwich – PB & J on homemade potato bread
Veggie – would actually be a fruit….probably banana, pear or apple
Snack – homemade granola bars – it’s too crumbly to carry on it’s own ;)

  26. Oh! Love these! I’ve made the move from plastic baggies and currently use reusable plastic containers for this kind of stuff, but they’re kind of bulky and I would much prefer a non-plastic, soft-sided alternative.

I typically like to assemble my sandwiches at work — they just taste more fresh to me that way — so I’d probably use the sandwich bag for bread, the veggie bag for sandwich filler (lettuce, tomato slices, onions, pickles, etc), and the snack bag for any number of things: carrots, grape tomatoes, cookies, nuts, crackers…

I would take my sandwich, fruit and veggies to work for lunch, drink out of my No Impact Man canning jar (my husband cut a hole in a canning lid for me) and not use all the styrofoam containers used at the cafeteria at work. When I use my jar, people are always asking me about it, I would think they would ask me about the Graze Organics bags also.

I have a reusable sandwich wrapper, currently, and have been looking for snack bags to add to the collection. These would be so much easier than washing out the plastic baggies to use over and over again. I would probably put some sort of veggies in one, some sort of nut in another and some sort of chip/cracker in the last one.
    These would be so great!

My kids are pretty, er, choosy, in what they’ll eat for lunch, so I’d put homemade bread with butter, cheese on the side in the sandwich bag; either apple slices or carrot sticks in the veggie bag; and raisins in the snack bag. Now if I was using them for myself, I’d put a yummy sandwich with lots of cheese, tomatoes and other veggies and mayo in the sandwich bag, carrot sticks in the veggie bag, and some peanut-butter/oatmeal/chocolate chip cookies in the snack bag…mmmm, I’m getting hungry!

I would probably sneak some use in myself, that is, if I can get my hands on them. So for the sandwich: hummus, avocado slices and shreds of red peppers on wheat. Veggie: what ever tastey veggie I can pull up from the garden, so right now…carrots. Snack: can’t go wrong with popcorn dusted with garlic powder or cinnamon. Thanks for this amazing give away! I am sure that these nice bags will inspire many to give up ziplocks!

So what would I pack in the bags? Well, I probably wouldn’t pack a sandwich n the sandwich bag very often…because I just don’t eat them that often (though I really do love PB&J) but it would still likely contain some sort of bread or bread-like product. The veggie bag is easy- I’d pack whatever veggies I’m packing that day! And the snack bag would be likely to contain something like grapes, or maybe more veggies…Or MAYBE Annie’s Bunny Grahams. *blush.*

  76. I usually bring leftovers for lunch, but now that my husband is also working, we run out of leftovers sooner. I plan on packing some sort of sandwich on homemade whole-wheat bread; carrots, celery, or broccoli; and nuts or granola. Thanks!

  78. Well, I’d take my sandwhich makings in seperate containers – if you put the tomato, lettuse and cheese on ahead none of it works together ( for me that is)

  80. I would put in a hummus sandwich, some dried apricots & walnuts (in the ‘veggie’ bag, ha ha ha), & maybe a piece of homemade chocolate chip bar (kind of like blondies) in the snack bag.

(& yeah, I would just toss them in the laundry if they got messy. Sometimes we wrap sandwiches in cloth napkins & that’s what we do w/them.)

  84. These bags look awesome, and no plastic (duh!).

Sandwich: We might have almond butter and honey, grated cheese with plum mostarda an onions, or cheese and apples.

Veggie: Let me see…cut apples, or the very small ones we get from market-whole, cut red peppers, or carrot coins would fill this bag nicely.

Snack: Here we’d find almonds, dried apricots and seaweed crackers.

We can’t wait to see if we win! Thanks for the contest and the chance to see what everyone else has for brown bag.

  86. Sandwich: homemade vegetarian burrito

    Veggie: carrot and fennel sticks

Snack: homemade, plastic-free oatmeal bars (most items can be purchased from the bulk bins)

    OATMEAL BARS
    2 cups rolled oats
    3/4 cup packed brown sugar
    1/2 cup wheat germ
    3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1 cup all-purpose flour
    3/4 cup raisins
    3/4 teaspoon salt
    1/2 cup honey
    1 egg, beaten
    1/2 cup vegetable oil
    2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Bake in a 9×13 pan at 350 for 30-35 minutes. Cool 5 minutes and cut into squares (they harden when cool).

I would put carrots and peppers in here, a PB& J on homemade bread, and/or roasted edamame with dried cranberries.

  90. These bags are adorable! :). Thank you for always finding such great environmental products! I would love to win these bags. As far as what I would put in them? Nothing. I never use plastic bags or cling wrap but have friends that love the stuff and also have kids so I would love to also give them away to hopefully ween one of my friends off of plastic baggies.

  92. Your bags are sooo cute but I don’t need the bags so don’t enter me in the give-away. I love your napkins on your website! I have many cloth napkins at home as that is all I use (sigh) I guess I need to add a few more to my collection!

  98. I’m not a big sandwich lover, but I do love banana bread, so that is probably what would end up in the sandwich bag. During the summer the fruit bag would probably have cherry tomatoes, in the winter probably dried fruit. And the snack bag would have whatever snackage was in the kitchen when I was ready to run out the door, which could be cookies or nuts or even a handful of popcorn.

  102. Right now my kids’ lunches look enormous due to stainless steel containers and all sorts of odd (glass jars, for example) containers. If I had the three bags, the sandwich for the kids would be two rice cakes with organic humus and sprouts the kids grew at home put together as a sandwich, the vegie bag would be a medley of thinly sliced jicama, carrot, sweet mini peppers, hothouse cucumbers, and turnips. (organic, of course). The snack would most likely be vegie booty as they both are addicts, but I might shock them with a little slice of organic pound cake made by these guys we know (Be Organic, LLC) – not trying to sell anything, they just happen to be four really good chefs and cool guys to boot. :)

  104. A partial list of things that would probably end up in the bags based on my current behavior: muffins, pieces of homemade bread, dried fruit/homemade fruit leather, nuts, small seasonal fruits (peaches, apples, plums, etc.), small seasonal veggies (cherry tomatoes, Persian cucumbers, carrot sticks), granola/cereal (for yogurt).
