Think we can't live without plastic? Think again. In 2007 I committed to stop buying any new plastic & I've almost succeeded! Won't you join me? Let's see what plastic-free looks like in 2012... for the health of our bodies, our oceans, our planet. ~Beth Terry

Tofu and plastic are so linked together, It is very hard to find plastic-free tofu. I'm in Hawai'i and the natural food stores here don't do the bulk thing for tofu, and there are no co-op food stores on the big island. I can sometimes buy homemade organic tofu at my farmers' market and re-use the plastic container, but that's the most. This is a real issue and if you could at all help by bringing attention to it, Mahalo.

Rob, so sorry to gross you out. I really don't understand how anyone can hate tofu when it just tastes like whatever it's cooked with. But to each his own... soy product, that is.

Simple in France, you are correct. We have several shops here that sell blocks of tofu from a tub of water. You take it out with tongs and put it in your own container. Of course, they provide plastic containers for the shoppers who don't bring their own. Meaning most of them, unfortunately, but Whole Foods and Berkeley Bowl are capable of weighing a customer's container and deducting the weight at the register.

Perhaps you could find out if there is a local tofu maker in your area and ask if they will sell you packaging-free tofu. Ours comes from Hodo Soy Beanery in Oakland, CA: http://www.hodosoy.com/tofu.html They make a variety of delicious soy products, but unfortunately the plain tofu blocks are the only ones that come without packaging. I wish they would sell the "soy omelette" without a plastic container because it's like eating heaven. And I don't get to have it anymore.

Maybe I need to push for a it a little more.

So--do I understand that you've found tofu not wrapped in plastic? I have never seen that here in France--I'm just happy to find tofu grown here without genetically modified soy! I like your way of breaking down the packaging of your recipes though. It makes me think how much more I could do in this department. . .
