Think we can't live without plastic? Think again. In 2007 I committed to stop buying any new plastic & I've almost succeeded! Won't you join me? Let's see what plastic-free looks like in 2012... for the health of our bodies, our oceans, our planet. ~Beth Terry

This is a great blog post! Cliche as it may sound, the children really are the future. Some "older" people just aren't capable of understanding these concepts, but kids are still open to common sense and aren't stuck in their ways.

Keep up the good work.

Hey Beth,

Very inspiring piece. Thank you for this and all the research. You might not realize it but you are truly making a huge difference. Look at your growing list of followers! Look at how much attention you have brought to the problem of plastic pollution. There is nobody else like you. Thank you for who you are and for everything you bring to the cause!

Hey, Beth. I just want to let you know that to people like me, your actions DO make a difference. I really want to make some positive changes in the way I live, and I'm not always sure where to start. I'm really glad you're sharing your own experience and knowledge to help the rest of us along.

That same night in 1988, I was sitting in a bar in Kent WA probably drinking a shot and thinking that all the fucking rednecks would rue the day that they Elected George Herbert Walker Bush. (Of course I was probably right when George W. Bush got the idea to become president like his daddy.) When it comes to politics, I have only known presidental happiness 4 times in my adult hood.
Great post this... And I am always amazed at young people that get it and have convictions. And they do it in spite of the adults around them.

It is my own generation that created the "throw away" society and set the next generation up for the immediate gratification syndrome. I am 53.

I believe the current times are the catalyst for the "correction".

I applaud the current teen generation for their diverse observations and believe their fresh enthusiasm coupled with their sheer briliance will have answers and present strong leadership to create a better world.

The challenges we face today present lessons and opportunities for change and these are the leaders of tomorrow. I have great faith in their ablilities!

Beth,

What a wonderful, inspiring piece. For so many of us, YOU are our inspiration - you're the one I think of when faced with plastic pollution. I know that you get discouraged sometimes - but now to know that these kids are inspiring YOU - it just tickles me! (And I wore big shoulder pads, had poofy 80s hair, and campaigned for Dukasis too!) But old George HW ended up not being so bad after all..(a lot better than his son, anyway!)

Can't wait to see you at Blogher in just about 2 months!

"But is the world changed by realists or by people who remain optimistic despite terrible odds?"

I'm not convinced there's a difference. Some of us OLD folks (I'm 63 now) are responsible for social movements like the FIRST environmental movement, civil rights, women's rights, etc. Yeah, it's EASIER when we have the energy of youth, but some of us "feed" off the energy of youth in the movements today, and many of us raised kids to BECOME the energy of youth in the movements today.

One fault I find with the young people of today is their desire for the latest multi-faceted devices. I've had my house-phone and a cheap watch (with replaceable battery) for years. We use both rarely and pull the stem on the watches to preserve the battery when we don't need to know the time (which is MOST of the time). Young people tend to upgrade to the latest blackberry, iphone, ipad, laptop, not even considering what happens to the ones they dump.

Please ... someone tell me that you donate your old ones to women's shelters or something, because I don't want to have even one fault in my head for the young people of today. I thrive on the energy you emit.
