Think we can't live without plastic? Think again. In 2007 I committed to stop buying any new plastic & I've almost succeeded! Won't you join me? Let's see what plastic-free looks like in 2012... for the health of our bodies, our oceans, our planet. ~Beth Terry

I have taken this to my workplace too! As part of our Environmental Team at Boeing, Kennedy Space Center, I was asked to present an environmental tip at our last meeting. So I put together a few charts to show the Pacific Garbage Patch, some facts about plastic and it's non-degradability, and a list of key points such as Refuse, Reuse, Recycle and web sites to go for suggestions & info (including, of course, THIS ONE!!) Beth and all who support this effort, thank you for inspiring me to keep spreading the word!

Dear Beth,

Thank you for being involved in this great initiative. Although I have pledged not to accept disposable plastics on the Plastic Pollution Coalition site, I have not been able to refuse all disposable plastics and I feel badly about this. So this month (and hopefully way beyond), I pledge:

1: No buying or acquiring new plastics.
2: No cooking with plastic or storing food in plastic.
3: Minimize all other plastic use.

Number 2 and 3 are relatively easy. The killer is no 1... the disposable food packaging. Even my boxed organic cereals have a plastic bag inside. It is so hard to live without plastic! I will however do it and blog about it on our lifewithoutplasticblog.com. I have just made my pledge public at the Rodale site in the comments section. Wish me good luck!

Hi Beth,

Just wanted to check in with you regarding my explanation of our family trash. I listed a section labeled non-recyclables and those went into the trash. We saved and analyzed everything! Again it was a great opportunity for all of us to work together. Thanks again for all the inspiration.

Kind regards,

Denise Yribarren

What wonderful news. I will send this item to some UK magazines to push them along

Here in the UK, supermarkets are rolling out milk bottles made of cardboard. Here's the report, together wioth a BBC news item on it. Asda (now owned by Wal- Mart), are the first to introduce them.

congrats on their effort! I wonder if this will be just a personal goal or a business/office goal. from someone who runs a business i find it way more challenging to reduce the plastic at our office than at home.
One example i'm curious about is their practice of sending home subscriptions magazines sealed in plastic wrap.

This is such a wonderful initiative. I live by the coast and am constantly amazed at all the plastic around. You would think that living here we would even be more socially conscious of what we use because of our proximity to the sea life that it affects. I am going to follow your daily blog at Rodale and see if I can pick up any good tips to pass on!
