Earth Day Invitations

Posted By Beth Terry On April 22, 2011 @ 7:00 am In Direct Action | 9 Comments

Happy Earth Day, everybody. I’m about to go out and get dirty.

I love dirt

But first… some invitations.

You Are Invited…

Bag It film…to come join me this Monday, April 25, at 7pm in San Francisco for a screening of the film Bag It: Is Your Life Too Plastic? [1] at the Landmark Opera Plaza movie theater [2], after which I’ll be around to answer questions. Find out what Jeb Berrier is doing in my bathroom. If you live near San Francisco and you haven’t seen the film yet, why not come Monday night?  If you can’t make it, check the Bag It community screening schedule [3] or to find out where it’ll screen near you.  You can even watch it on TV [4] this month.

You Are Not Invited…

Dasani bottle litter…to Coca Cola’s gala Earth Day event today, starring Matthew Morrison from the TV show “Glee” and a bevy of models covering up only 30% of their bodies, to promote Coke’s new invention: Dasani bottled municipal water in a plastic bottle made with 30% ethanol from Brazilian sugarcane plantations.  That’s Coke’s idea of earth-friendly.  But I disagree, and so do the Plastic Pollution Coalition, Earth Resource Foundation, Californians Against Waste, and a whole host of other groups and citizens who care for the planet.

Please sign on to our RSVP to Coca Cola [5], sending our regrets.  No, it’s not that we’re sorry for blowing off their party.  Read our statement [5] to learn what we do regret. Please sign [5] and post on Facebook, tweet, blog, and email to everyone you know. The point of this “petition” is education. We don’t blame actor Matthew Morrison for participating in the Dasani event. We just think he, like a lot of people, doesn’t understand the environmental impact of bottled water and how substituting chemicals from crops doesn’t make the plastic bottle any better.

Reminders…

There’s still time to…

Win a plastic-free stainless steel Reflect Klean Kanteen water bottle, provided by Greenfeet. [6]

Get your free GlassDharma straws. [7]

Win a copy of the book Plastic: A Toxic Love Story. [8]

Go outside and play in the dirt.  That’s where I’ll be today.  Cheers!
