I had a friend who was constantly posting laser printers to freecycle for that very reason! But I told her to read the fine print: laser printers generally come with a starter toner cartridge that doesn't go as far as a regular cartridge. I'm not sure if that's true for inkjets.

Nice to know that HP gets it!

We just bought a new HP Deskjet Printer. When we opened the box we were pleasantly surprised (actually, shocked) to find it wrapped in a reusable shopping bag instead of plastic. It was held in place with cardboard instead of styrofoam too. What's frustrating, though, is the realization that since the $19 printer came complete with printer cartridges (however little ink they might contain), it is probably cheaper for me to buy a new printer everytime I run out of ink than it is to buy replacement cartridges. What's up with that?
