My Plastic-free Life - Topic: Eating on Amtrak http://myplasticfreelife.com/forum/miscellaneous/eating-on-amtrak/ Simple:Press Version 5.6.7 Natalie on Eating on Amtrak http://myplasticfreelife.com/forum/miscellaneous/eating-on-amtrak/#p1414 Miscellaneous http://myplasticfreelife.com/forum/miscellaneous/eating-on-amtrak/#p1414 One of my favorite things about an Amtrak trip is the cafe car.  What troubles me is, when I like to get a coffee on my trips on the Vermonter, the staff aren't allowed to put it into my reusable coffee mug.  I'm not sure if it's a food safety issue or they think it's a terrorist issue (I think it started after 9/11).  I don't know why that would be deemed a big risk when I've never had my bag searched.  One staff member suggested I pour the coffee from the paper cup into my mug - which I did.  But now that I know more about plastics, I don't think it's safe to pour boiling liquid into the soft plastic that lines those cups even for a second, if it's for drinking.  And it does nothing to solve the waste issue.  Does anyone know why Amtrak has this policy, and is there anything that can be done to avoid it?  Granted, the coffee isn't fair trade and the milk is gmo etc, but the same policy applies to hot water for teas.
