Any other apartment managers out there?

This is probably a long shot, but it doesn't hurt to ask!

I recently became manager of an apartment complex-- a weird random job that just kind of landed in my lap. Prior to this I have no experience in the field. I was hoping to bump into other managers who are conscious of the environmental issues we deal with… I haven't met any in real life yet…

It seems everywhere I turn I'm bound by a lot of rules and regulations. For example, no hanging laundry to dry, no loose garbage in the dumpsters, no letting the leaves fall and just be leaves (yes, they blow them with their machines even in the rain, it's absurd).

So far all I've accomplished is No-VOC paint for turn-overs, recycled paper office supplies, and an agreement with the carpet cleaning company not to use their mystery chemical deodorizing treatment at the end of the cleaning. (It's free and makes the apartment smell like nothing happened, but it's a silly use of extra chemicals. They can't fathom why I would decline a free service like that.)

I was hoping to get more suggestions on possible changes- Any other managers in the house? An eco-vendor list would be stellar! Or apartment dwellers with suggestions? Looking forward to hearing your stories!:)

Hi Jeffie. I know one person who used to be a building manager. I don't know how green she was at the time, but now she's working on recycling for a large university system. I can ask her if she has any ideas for you.

Jeffie… same situation! The job kind of landed right in our laps too. We are trying to make the building as green as possible. It IS difficult, what with the laws for having to re-paint and the carpeting… luckily our owner is open to suggestions, so we are able to move ahead with some things. We install low-flo fixtures when the need arises (and it's an older place so the need arises a lot!), and we plan to re-landscape with native plants for lower water usage (we're in Los Angeles), and we are one by one getting the cheap icky carpets replaced with laminate flooring, which is much better. I plan to start a composter and encourage residents to pass along their kitchen scraps to me. We already have recycling bins, so we're good there… but I'm trying for green waste bins too. We are also going for greener pest control… that's about it so far!
