I'd look into tins like these (I'm not recommending the store, just the images). They're mostly aluminum and will dent under impact, but you can get them pretty cheap. Frontier Co-op carries a few sizes. Or you could get a magnetic spice rack -- but they nearly always have clear plastic tops, so the light can degrade your spices.

We use old glass vitamin bottles. Otherwise, you could use those To-Go Ware stainless steel Sidekicks. They are small, non-breakable, lightweight, easy to clean, and not horribly expensive!

I bike too. I just bring small glass jars. I also will bring small paper bags that I reuse over and over again. It helps -- if you know you are going to shop for bulk spices -- to bring a funnel.

seems like only way to carry bulk spices home from grocery store plastic free is glass bottles or steel cannisters. (any other ways you can think of?) since i bike commute, lighter, less fragile steel containers appeal to me more. what are people using? i found some online, looking mostly for really small cannisters as i only use tiny bits of any spice over any period of time.
