Also, if you contact your local Weston Price Foundation group, they can probably steer you to a local farmer who either has lard to sell or who can get you the materials to render your own lard. Rendering lard is not supposed to be hard to do (I have thus far been spoiled by lard making friends and have been spared this chore). You can sometimes buy lard at the grocery by the pound that is packaged in paper like butter. I know one grocery near me in Arkansas that carries it like that.

And the other day my shoelace broke. I figured I had two options, 1) I could grow organic hemp in my basement (hoping that the feds don't jack in my back door) and by next winter have enough fiber to make another shoelace so I can go to work. Meanwhile I could spend the summer whittling a local oak into a spinning wheel and loom so that I can make said shoelace in the fall; or 2) I can buy a pair of shoelace from a store even though the aglets are made of plastic. I know it's not very sporting of me, but I think I'll be going with option 2. Anybody got a better idea? These are for dorky looking, but functional black Birkenstock work shoes with the traditional eyelet schema.

Plus I'm looking for lard to make tortilla chips (because nobody in my area sells chips sans the plastic bag). Anybody got a line on leaf lard (preferably made from organic, pasture raised, heritage pigs) that is not packaged in plastic?
