I'm leaving for Puerto Vallarta in a week for just 5 days and my first thought is – since everyone's discouraged from drinking tap water, what do I do to reduce or avoid plastic bottles altogether? The only solution I can think of is getting big plastic milk-jug types and pouring the water in my own stainless steel bottle. I'm sure there's a better idea lurking somewhere. One possibility – I can bring my own brita pitcher to use with the hotel tap water but will it filter out the nasty stuff in their tap water? Advice needed! Gracias!
I've heard really good things about the Katadyn portable water filters made in Switzerland. Apparently they contain little plastics and do well with bacteria. You can filter the water you need as you go. You can find a dealer here: http://www.katadyn.com/caen/de…..er-search/. I do not know of any portable filters that contain no plastics at all.
Have a great trip!

I agree with Chantal. I don't think a Brita will do it for you. And I also don't know of a plastic-free filter. Katadyn is what my brother uses when camping to drink water from a stream, so it would probably work pretty much anywhere. But I'm not an expert.
Katadyn also has a list of tips to avoid getting sick from water while traveling:
Also, they have this very comprehensive guide about what contaminants are in water and where:
And the filter in this bottle is glass, as opposed to plastic which many of the other models use:
Not selling Katadyn here. Just interesting to research.
