There are some alternatives to weed eaters. If you use a gas powered weed eater, try a brush cutter. It is a steel saw blade on the end of the weed eater instead of line. Or check lowes or most any big box hardware- the should have "Chain Lines" to replace the nylon one. Unfortunately I haven't seen them for electric or rechargeable models yet... but I am hoping that will be next.

OR check clean air gardening at http://www.cleanairgardening.com/ for some nifty alternatives to the beloved weed eater!

rocks. Big ones. Fill in the gaps with sand, then gravel. If the grass can't see light, it won't grow. Or you could plant flowers and mulch them with bark... Or a ground cover like ivy (though you'll want to contain it with some kind of wall or barrier).

Personally, I love digging, so I'd attack the uneven parts and try to put up decorative walls or styles or something, or even them out. But I can't get enough of shovel work (yes, it's because I sit at a desk all day for employment).

Ooooo! You could pull up the grass and re-seed with this no-mow stuff, here are a few links: http://nomowgrass.com/ , http://www.for-wild.org/downlo.....nomow.html , if you google "no mow" lots of stuff comes up. I must admit, I haven't done it because my lawn is flat and I'm trying to turn it all into garden anyway, but I've always wanted to try it.

Oh man. That's really disheartening, isn't it. You didn't happen to take pictures, did you? I'm probably the only one who would have my camera at a moment like that just in case I needed to snap a pic of some random plastic in my yard. But if you did, please post them!

Ack! Everywhere I look plastic rears its ugly head! We did some spring cleaning this weekend - due to the lovely un-winter weather we've been having in Houston lately, and oh-no! I just realized that weed-eaters are bad bad bad. You know how the cutting strands "wear out" and then you replace them? I just realized that they "wear out" all over my yard - not good! I was cleaning the yard (house is a rental) with a keen eye because we have chickens this year, and they're not the best at distinguishing animate from inanimate objects for food, and low and behold - I find pieces of those pesky fluorescent orange weedeater strings in the yard! I have a push mower to use for summer this year, but there are parts of the yard that are very uneven and hard to use the push mower over. Not sure what I'm going to do come summer - I wish I didn't have a yard! Any suggestions?
