Thanks for your suggestions. The generic baking soda sold through Walgreens, etc is also Arm and Hammer, BTW. They've cornered the market. Obviously, there are more pressing world issues than baking soda, but Bob's Red Mill is a family run business. There are no other chemicals used in the mining process, and no animal testing as well. Here are a couple links for more info:

Here's a good news business story about how the owner (Bob) gave ownership to employees when he retired:

Hi Dana. That is frustrating. One thing I have learned to do is preemptively request no plastic or styrofoam packaging when placing an order. If they can't comply, I will try and find whatever it is somewhere else and explain to them why. At this point, I would send them a letter about the packaging and how disappointed it made you. If you're really motivated, you could even make a stronger point by sending it back to them.

Question: What is wrong with Arm & Hammer's baking soda? I really don't know.

Cheers!

I read somewhere that Arm and Hammer sells about 80% of the consumer baking soda in the US, so I checked out Bob's Red Mill. Overall, Bob's Red Mill has a good track record and no animal testing. So, the only way I could afford to buy their baking soda was in bulk. I had, get this, 50lbs of baking soda sent to me to get it to @$1.00 per pound. It comes in 25 lb bags, was on sale, and I went for it. I felt good about my decision until I opened the delivered box, and found a huge number of styrofoam pellets surrounding the baking soda bags. Man! It's so hard to do the "right thing" at times! Ranting!
