Let's see what plastic-free looks like in 2012... for the health of our bodies, our oceans, our planet. ~Beth Terry

Jaque Fresco of the Venus Project, who lived through the Great Depression of 1919, seems a down-to-earth man who sees parallels in today's financial crisis. The idea behind the project is to change to a sustainable type system where the world's resources are shared by all on an equal basis.

Their movement is looking to make a film to promote their vision to a greater audience. Jaque is looking to get other people involved to form an effective grouping with the idea of forming self-sustaining communities.

There is reference to the state of the planet, akin to Beth's shared ideas so it is worth looking at the ideas and maybe discussing it in detail.

Zeitgeist is astrological bunkum. Having an objective view, the many inaccuracies throw doubt on the basis for this movement.

Clif, I too had disagreements with some opinions and doubted the truthfulness of some information showed in Zeitgeist. I do believe though, that the main issues are real. The film opened my mind in the subject of "the monetary system", since I had never thought about it very much. When I was a child though, I read a few of Enrique Barrios' books ("Ami: child of the stars"), which describe other peaceful worlds where there is no money and the environment is looked after.

http://www.infiniteunknown.net.....mibook.pdf

They are books for children, but those ideas stayed with me somehow. I never thought other people may have similar thoughts until I watched Zeitgeist :)

I'd like to discuss it. It would be very interesting.

Lara, I started watching Zeitgeist and it's very interesting. I paused for now after part one. It mixes fact and opinion to present ideas that are not all well supported. Several times I thought, yes, how true but an equal number of times I thought, wait just a second, that is unwarranted and contrary to evidence.

I think the program would be a great subject to discuss section by section, like Beth is doing with No Impact Man, but would that be ok on this forum since it would not deal primarily with the subject of plastic (are you there, Beth?). Since the program is supported with a slide series where points are made, it would be ideal for dissection. Is anyone else interested in taking it apart for better or worse?

I'll keep watching as time allows. Bully for them to come up with a program that is over an hour. Not everything can be handled in 5 minutes on YouTube!

Why not take a look at this situation from a different perspective? We're analizing this as if money was a "fact of life", a rule of our world, like gravity or rain. We judge almost very choice in our life by its monetary cost. Why not change this monetary system we live in and do things differently? If this sounds completely utopian to you, I say: dare to dream!! Dare to question the system in every way you can, and then decide if you want to give up before trying to make it change.

If you wonder why I think this way, watch "Zeitgeist: addendum" (for free following this link): http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com/

Being car-free and meat-light (working on becoming a vegetarian--haven't bought any meat in over a year, just a little fish) save me thousands of euros every year, which allows me to spend a little extra at times on environmentally friendly products. We must be careful, though, as there are a lot of greenwashers out there.

I came across mention of a survey of consumer habits concerning environmentally friendly products. 500 people participated and the result is interesting, particularly in the hesitancy of folks to buy eco-items that cost more. Everyone should recognize that helping the environment means choosing a higher purchase price up front rather than having the extra cost remain "external", only to bite us in the future through the unseen damage done.
