Jennifer in Saskatchewan, Week 1

Jennifer in Saskatchewan's plastic waste

Name: Jennifer

Personal Info:
I’m in Saskatchewan, Canada. Plastic recycling is virtually non-existent here, but I found a company that will take 1-7. The catch: they charge $2.50 per bag, even when it’s dropped off to them! This is just one more reason to cut back, though, because I can no longer in good conscience throw it in the trash.

Total items: 17

Total weight:

Items: Recyclable
French fry bag (#4 I believe)
Honey container
Spice container
Tofu container
plastic bag (x2)

Items: Nonrecyclable
Bob’s Red Mill bread mix bag and yeast packet
Ketchup packet
Styrofoam container (x2, only one shown)
cd wrapper
wine cork and label/cover
feminine product wrapper
ground almonds wrapper
chocolate bar wrapper (recycled plastic)

What items can I replace with plastic free or less plastic?
CD wrapper – Should buy music online.
Chocolate – I tend to forget which ones come in plastic.

What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
Takeout containers and bags – I am ashamed.
Ketchup packets – I rarely eat the stuff
Bread mix and almonds bag – purchased a long time ago, would rather make from scratch (and have switched to bulk)

What Items are essential and do not have a plastic alternative?
wine, tofu, honey (although I plan to ask at the farmer’s market this weekend if I can get my honey in a jar).

What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
Take reusable containers to restaurants for the rare occasions when we eat out, and get over the embarrassment.

Stick to buying bulk, even if it’s not always convenient.

What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?
None of these things are things I consume regularly

Are there any other conclusions I can draw?
Although I have been much more conscious of my plastic consumption in the past month or so, there is still a lot of it hanging around… and it will hang around long after I am done with it…
