Plastic Challenge: Christina S., Week 5

IMG_6136

Ideas for pasta? Every single box of pasta I’ve found, even at Whole Foods, comes with a plastic window.

Location:Los Angeles, California, United States

Name: Christina S.

Week: 5

Personal Info:

I work full-time as a public health nutritionist. Married with a 3-year-old child. We share a household with my father-in-law.

List of plastic items REFUSED this week. (Yay!)

Take out tray and utensils at Whole Foods counter
Newspaper bag (The LA Times indeed delivered my Sunday paper without a bag per last week’s request. However, this required the carrier to remove the pre-bagged paper, park her car across the street, and hand-deliver it to my doorstep. Not an effective way to reduce plastic bag use.)

Total items collected: 18

Total weight: 0.456 lbs

Items: Recyclable
Prenatal vitamins bottle
Ketchup bottle

Items: Nonrecyclable
Cheese wrappers (2)
Caps from glass milk bottles (3)
Seal from ceramic yogurt cup
Croutons bag
Cereal bag
Graham crackers bag
Plastic seal from prenatal vitamins bottle
Window on pasta box
Almonds bag
Onion bagels bag
Shopping bag received from a freecycle item
Hamburger buns bag
Tag from bulk foods

What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?

What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
packaged croutons. I just can’t see myself making my own. Please let me know if there’s a way to buy them without plastic- my son loves them.

What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
Prenatal vitamins, at least for this stage in my life.

What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?

What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?

What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?

pasta- does your whole foods have a fresh pasta counter? They make it in-store and you buy it by the pound. Got my ravioli in a cardboard box, not sure what they put the other items in but you could probably bring a container for it.
