We are collecting our plastic trash for all of 2011. Read about our family on my Week 1 post.
Blog: It Starts With Me
Total items: 25
Total weight: 1.7 oz
4 milk jug caps (from reusable glass bottles)
4 rings from milk jug cap
1 marshmallow bag
1 graham cracker package
3 produce tags
2 safety seals (from local beer)
2 caps (from local beer)
4 plastic wraps (from Luna Pops <–local handmade popsicles)
4 wrappers (from ice cream truck)
What items can I replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
The produce tags are done. The farmers market just opened and my CSA is set to start!!
We went camping and the last time we went camping was during our plastic-free food week, so my kids didn’t get s’mores. This time I wanted to make sure they had s’mores…. but I was feeling lazy. I have been making graham crackers since Oct. Shouldn’t have been lazy.
Also, make marshmallows… and while the process isn’t plastic-free, it does use less plastic to make vs buy.
Luna Pops. Now that the weather is warming up, I’ll start making popsicles on a regular basis. Hopefully, this will eliminate the urge to purchase these pops.
What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
The purchases from the ice cream truck. <–not my call. The ice cream truck comes through our neighborhood about 2x a year. Knowing I would say “no”…. my kids went directly to their dad who happily purchased and joined them for “ice cream” <—can it really be called ice cream?? Not sure. (I said “no thank you.”)
I bought local beer for my husband. Really wish they didn’t use the plastic seal or cap.
What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
None are essential. Though we are not ready to commit to not purchasing milk. (by “we” … I mean my husband and kids ;) )
What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
Not give into “wants” of my kids. I’m still working on it…. my husband needs some training. ;)
What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?
Produce with tags will be replaced with farmers market and csa produce.
Plastic wrapped ice cream/popsicle treats. We’ll go get cupcakes instead ;)
What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
Really bummed with the amount of plastic we used this week…especially in comparison to what we were able to accomplish last week. It’s difficult… I feel like as a family we’re all “reading the same book”… but on different pages.
*sigh* I feel like a yo-yo plastic user.
