Plastic Challenge: Danielle, Week 20

Danielle_NC20

Name: Danielle

Week: 20

Location: North Carolina, United States

Personal Info:

We are collecting our plastic trash for all of 2011. Read about our family on my Week 1 post.

Blog: It Starts With Me

Total items: 9

Total weight: forgot to weigh

Items: Recyclable
1 ketchup bottle (#1)

Items: Nonrecyclable
2 Gardein packages

2 milk jug caps (from glass jugs)

3 plastic rings from caps

1 plastic wrapping (from magazine)

What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
I found some ketchup in glass. Granted it is habanero ketchup.

Also, started our garden. We planted loads of tomato plants, so the plan for this summer is to make ketchup. (fingers crossed)

What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
As soon as I got the magazine wrapped in plastic, I knew what to do. I called customer service and cancelled… letting them know my 2 reasons why:

1. Plastic bag
2. Waste of paper

Note to others who like magazines: Often magazines will come wrapped in plastic for “special offers”… I was told today that “no special offers” could be added to my account and I wouldn’t receive a plastic bag.

What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
Nothing is essential.

What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
Exactly what we’re doing. Rethinking what we use… how often we use it… and taking gradual steps towards lasting change.

What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?
Giving up the magazine… forever :)

What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
Hmmm… I keep thinking that we go through ketchup way too fast… but as I was looking at older entries of mine, I realized that the last time we ran out of ketchup was on Week 13!!! I’m thrilled that we were able to stretch the use of a bottle of ketchup for 7 weeks!!!

Ok... so we finally opened the habanero ketchup last night! AND... it's so yummy! My 9 year old loves it. BUT... there are 2 things wrong with it.

1. It's not organic. I looked past that fact because it's in glass and doesn't have any funky ingredients... no HFCS or preservatives.

2. It's imported from Costa Rica!! HOLY COW, that's a LONG way for ketchup! I should have read everything on the bottle before I bought it! (though my husband told me that I should've figured since I bought it at "WORLD Market".) oops.

So the adventure of habanero ketchup is fun (and tasty)... but it will end with this bottle ;)

Reading up on making ketchup as tomato season is just around the corner!

Danielle, thanks for the tip about asking for "no special offers" from magazine subscriptions. I wish all magazines would skip the plastic when there are no inserts. Some are packaged in plastic regardless.

Looking forward to your eventual ketchup adventure. As it is, the habanero ketchup sounds like an adventure in itself. How do the kids like it?
