Plastic Challenge: Ellen and Pedro, Week 1

Personal Info:

Two vegetarian people and two non-vegetarian (;-)) cats, trying already to contain our waste. We shop once every two weeks so we take the challenge two weeks at the time.

So far none, we take this as our ‘baseline’ fortnight.

230g plastic wrappers, lids, misc

What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
milk bottles – although the organic milk comes in plastic and not in glass, we prefer animal well fare over the glass…tough choice.
cola – there may be cans
pay more attention to misc plastic wrappers of general items
no more fruit in trays

What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
packaged cheese cubes

What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
we’ll discover along the way

What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
Veggie burgers seem to come in plastic containers only, maybe we can buy them separately at the health store.

What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?

What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
Disheartening how much misc plastic we use. Next shopping hopefully we can reduce this waste.

Thanks for the receipe! We also make our own ranging from 'meaty' ones with chickpeas to 'fishy' ones with seaweed. But we sometimes also eat veggie sausage and that is more challenging to make at home.

@Ellen and Pedro Whoa, I've never tried or even heard of a 'fishy' veggie burger. That sounds delicious! I have a decent supply of seaweed currently at home that I can use to try these burgers out. What else goes in them?

Plastic-Free Ericka Moderator maybe it will be good with flowers as well, but we cook it with flour, sorry for the typo ;-)

I bake them in a pan with soja butter. If you pre-heat the butter until it is nice and warm it will seal the burger instantly. I hope you like them!

@Ellen and Pedro I can't wait to try this! Thank you so much for sharing. Do you then bake them or fry them?

220gr dried seaweed (I used Kombu)- soaked in water until soft (the more seaweed the 'fishier the water gets'--> use this 'fishy' water to boil 2 large potatoes (I used 4 medium ones) until 'al dente'.

Mix 100gr dried breadcrumbs, salt, 1 spoon flower/arrowroot, half a spoon natural yeast (i used vegmite instead).

Puree the potatoes and add the seaweed (i cut the kombu with a very sharp knife), 250g shredded tofu (not the silky kind), half a red onion, a bit of olive oil, 100gr pureed chickpeas and 2 pickles (i left these out, i prefer them in a nice (vegan) tartar sauce to go with it). Mash all of this again and add salt and pepper to taste. For more 'fish' add a teaspoon of kelp powder.
