Plastic Challenge: Karen, Week 5

WP_20140505_14_06_29_Pro

Do the stick-free baking paper products eg. Glad Bake, contain any plastic products, or are these natural waxes?

Location:Perth, Australia

Name: Karen

Week: 5

Personal Info:

I am refusing lots of plastic each week, and hardly purchase anything containing plastic the last few weeks. But, my plastic stash is still substantial while I work my way through products I’d bought before starting the challenge.

List of plastic items REFUSED this week. (Yay!)
Plastic packaging on meat (asked them to just wrap in paper)
I bought ‘fabric’ bandaids, to reduce plastic. But as they are waterproof ones, they might contain some type of polymer? The tear off bits (backs) are all plastic anyways.

Total items collected: 14

Total weight:

Items: Recyclable
Yoghurt container (and lid?)
Take-away coffee cup (biodegradable)

Items: Nonrecyclable
1 x lid – takeaway coffee (6)
2 x plastic packets – nori sheets
1 x plastic packet – Goji
2 x plastic packets – rice
1 x plastic wrapper around packet of tea bags
1 x foil/plastic wrapper – dishwasher tablet
1 x plastic sticker on apple
1 x plastic border left on page, after peeled off new plastic membership card
1 x plastic tube – conditioner
1 x ‘waxy’ paper – wrapped cheese
+ lots more bandaids! 🙂

What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
Buy dishwashing detergent as loose powder

What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?

What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?

What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
Might have to find a convenient way to carry my ‘keep cup’ when I do my big walk up to the beach cafe on the weekends (without taking a bag?).

What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?

What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
