Plastic Challenge: Kelsey Sharp, Week 1

I only ate two nut/granola bars this week, but most of my plastic waste usually comes from individually-wrapped snacks. I know I can make my own bars and such, so I would like suggestions on where to find healthy snack recipes!

I am a single woman who lives with one other roommate and a few of her pets. I work at a coffee shop away from home. At work this past week, I used a starch knife. I accidentally threw it away, but I wanted to mention it; in retrospect I think I should have included it.

List of plastic items REFUSED this week. (Yay!)

I never drink water in plastic water bottles.
Foods pre-packaged in plastic bags, like chips.

Plastic wrappers from nut bars. Saran wrap. Bag that held veggie sausage patties.

What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
Definitely replace saran wrap with aluminum foil or reusable jars.

What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
Anything. I can’t think of many plastic things that that I cannot substitute with something else or live without right now.

What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
None of my plastic waste so far has not had an alternative, or is essential to sustain my life.

What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
I need to be more mindful and aware when I am grocery shopping. I can reuse my the individual produce and bulk bags to minimize my consumption of plastic bags.

What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?
I will no longer use saran wrap.

What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
