I was surprised by the items that I purchased from the grocery store that are not recyclable, so any ways to be smarter about my groceries trips would be great.
Location:Santa Cruz, California, United States
Name: Megan Peterson
I am a student at UCSC and have four housemates.
List of plastic items REFUSED this week. (Yay!)
I refused to use plastic Ziploc bags, plastic cling wrap and plastic water bottles.
Total items collected: 15
1 yogurt carton
1 Caesar Salad package
1 container of peanuts, 3 bags of chips, 2 cookie wrappers, 2 Nutri grain bar wrappers, 1 package of salami deli meat, 1 penne pasta wrapper, 1 garlic bread wrapper, 1 rice wrapper, and 1 broccoli bag wrapper.
What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
I could bring more snacks to school in Tupperware so I am not purchasing snacks in plastic throughout the school week. I could also reduce purchasing items that are non recyclable plastics like with pasta and produce.
What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
I could give up the snack foods like chips and cookies in plastics which would also be healthier. I would also be willing to give up any frozen food packages such as the easy microwavable things.
What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
Milk has glass and paperboard but I don’t how much better those alternatives are in comparison. Meats, cheeses, and bread usually all have plastics.
What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
Buying more fresh, locally grown food without any plastic covering, and less of the processed foods. If the plastic must be purchased than check to see if it’s recyclable.
What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?
Replace any packaged produce for non packaged.
What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
I was surprised by the amount of plastic I purchased or used in only a week and that most of it was not able to be recycled. However being more aware of it can help me make better choices and try alternatives.
