Take the challenge. Collect your plastic waste (both recyclable and non) for one week or more. Then photograph, tally, and post it here. What can we learn about our habits and lifestyles by examining our waste? And what changes can each of us make to leave the planet a little less trashy?

I wonder what it is that causes us to be shy about certain things. I'm not shy about bringing my reusable bags everywhere. In fact, I went shopping at Target with a bunch of friends recently and brought reusable bags for all of them. And I bring my own container to the butcher shop every week for chicken for my kitties. But today, after I had been doing this for many months, the butcher asked me why I never wanted plastic, and I thought, "Wow!" All this time and I had never bothered to explain to him about why I was plastic-free. I think somehow I was shy about it.

Getting over shyness just takes practice. Maybe going in to a store on purpose with a reusable bag just "for practice." Maybe make it a store you don't normally frequent so that if it's just too unbearable and embarrassing, you don't have to go back. But I'll bet it won't be as bad as you think. Everyone's wising up to the green thing these days.
