Anastacia Andrade, Week 1

Anastacia's plastic waste

Name: Anastacia Andrade

Week: 1

Personal Info:

Phoenix, Arizona, Female, Married, WAHM, daughter- 4yrs, son-almost 2yrs. I could have a lot less plastic if I didn’t buy on-the-go snacks, such as cheese sticks, and go-gurts, for the kids. My kids like popsicles in the summer. It’s so easy to buy dye-free, natural flavored popsicles for $1.50 than to find the ingredients for those or yogurt smoothie pops.

Total items: 37

Total weight:

Items: Recyclable
big juice bottle #1 PETE
naked juice bottle #7 other
peanut butter container #1 PETE
dixie/solo sample cups #?
bagel bag #4?
torilla bag #4?
2 solo spoons #?

They are picked up, weekly, in our blue-bins, curbside. They are delivered to a transfer station, 15 mins from my house. They are sold, once sorted and bundled. All plastics 1-7, but styrofoam.
Plastic bags, stretchy-type plastic is brought back to grocers to bagCentralStaion dot com. They don’t take plastic bags that rips like paper. The city has a buyer who makes plastic/wood lumber. Other buyers make lawn furniture.

styrofoam doggie box #6(this one really burns me, bc I pulled out my take-out container, and then left it on the counter! I even went back out to the car to see if I left it there)
City does not have a #6 styrofoam buyer.

What items can I replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
>take out box!
>I already found another PB brand in glass I like.
>utensils, I carry a set.
>I say no to bady favors, but our neighbor dropped them off while I was gone:(
>I buy d.chocolate wrapped in paper, but with halloween, I can’t resist Reese’s!
>Need to ask waiters to bring short glasss or mugged water instead of plastic sippies.

What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
Reese’s :(
Restt. kid beverages. I carry their water containers everywhere.

What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
medications

What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
learn more recipes, and find time to practice them.

What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?
Reese’s

What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?

It is still difficult to be without plastic. When I first began to look for alternatives, it was really hard to find it. I have to shop at signature stores to find the variety one is used to seeing everywhere else.
I ran the Race for the Cure and all the vendors were handing out plastic stuff and paper flyers. I had to say no to so much..including a bag that contained one non-plastic item, in it I did want.
I brought my own water. I did say yes to an all natural soda in a can.
