Comments on: Plastic Challenge: Sarah Schmiechen, Week 2

Take the challenge. Collect your plastic waste (both recyclable and non) for one week or more. Then photograph, tally, and post it here. What can we learn about our habits and lifestyles by examining our waste? And what changes can each of us make to leave the planet a little less trashy?

I'm not sure about the hankie thing. It seems kind of icky to me, but who knows where this challenge will take me. :)

I too have become a total hankie freak. They are really SOOOO much nicer than tissue, and I even discovered that I don't sneeze as much when I use cloth hankies instead of paper. I think the dust in the tissue was bothering my very sensitive nose.

On the TP front, I'm totally off the eco deep-end, but you can read about my method in the comments section here: http://myplasticfreelife.com/showyourplastic/2011/01/michelle-c-week-1/

We came to the same conclusion regarding Brita! After spending the good part of 2008 working on a campaign to get Brita to take back and recycle their filters, I ended up deciding I didn't need the filter in the first place.

We get our toilet paper via Amazon.com. We signed up for the subscription, which gives you a big discount, and it comes in a cardboard box. The only plastic is the tape on the box. Here's info: http://myplasticfreelife.com/2007/08/seventh-generation-amazoncom-solving/

I don't use Kleenex anymore either, unless I'm really sick. I carry handkerchiefs for just day to day sniffles. Would that work for you to cut down on tissues?

Glad the baking soda is working out for you! I'm actually going to put up a post on plastic-free deodorant options -- maybe tonight!
