We are collecting our plastic trash for all of 2011. Read about our family on my Week 1 post.
Blog: It Starts With Me
Total items: 12
Total weight: 2.2 oz.
We have recycling pick up at our home. We use our service mainly for paper and glass.
1 Mustard container (#2)
2 produce ties
1 milk jug cap
3 rings from milk jug caps
1 salad dressing cap
2 contact lens packages
2 heart worm packages (for our 2 dogs)
What items can I replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
Mustard. I can get it in glass (though I believe there’s a plastic lid). Since we don’t use mustard that often– this bottle was seriously at least a year old!!– my plan is to make mustard.
What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
Salad dressing. I make most of my salad dressings anyway.
What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
Contact lenses and the heart wormer.
What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
I’ve been using more milk than we normally do… I’m going to start making almond milk regularly and using it in recipes in lieu of the local milk we buy.
What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?
Going to use less milk… but I still have milk that I need to use before it goes bad.
What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
Last week, I had what I felt was a LOT of plastic waste…. BUT… this week I was determined to stay focused. With family staying with us for part of the week, I really wanted to focus on not using plastics…one to show them that it can be done AND especially because if I cooked our meals with foods that came in plastic my tally would sky rocket!! <— there’s where sharing my plastic waste is helping to keep me focused!! I’m happy to share that all of the meals I cooked while they were in town were ALL plastic-free!!! (I even made 16 burger buns when I made black bean burgers!!!… yes, my mother and father-in-law were super impressed!!!) Awesome week!!!! :)
