Take the challenge. Collect your plastic waste (both recyclable and non) for one week or more. Then photograph, tally, and post it here. What can we learn about our habits and lifestyles by examining our waste? And what changes can each of us make to leave the planet a little less trashy?

I wondered about the cough drop thing... bummer. That's the hardest thing... I'm normally awesome about making things homemade... but when I get sick, I don't want to do anything. I guess I have at least another 6 months to a year before I'll need cough drops... maybe I can find another solution :)

I can make my own sour cream... YAY!! But... I can't get cream in glass. For whatever reason, the local cream (and even butter) come packaged in plastic. *sigh* .... sour cream may end up getting eliminated or become my 2x a year treat. Hmmm...

See, there's an irony about making cough drops, which is that when you're sick enough to need them, you don't have the energy to make them. And when you're well enough to make them, you worry that they might not keep until you're sick again. Okay, I guess they would. Anyway, my illness and cough got so bad that I opted for the big guns: Vicodin. I asked for Vicodin instead of Rx cough medicine because I wanted to avoid all the crap ingredients like artificial colors, preservatives, etc. and just go for the unadulterated opiate. It worked. The active ingredient in Rx cough medicine is, after all, codeine or hydrocodone.

And yes, you can make your own sour cream! I've done it. You mix cream and buttermilk and let it sit for 8 hours.

But it won't be plastic-free because even if you get your cream and milk in glass, they'll have the plastic caps.
