Take the challenge. Collect your plastic waste (both recyclable and non) for one week or more. Then photograph, tally, and post it here. What can we learn about our habits and lifestyles by examining our waste? And what changes can each of us make to leave the planet a little less trashy?

Actually Haley, you're partly right. Sometimes envelope windows are glassine. Sometimes they are plastic. I wrote about envelope windows here:

It's hard to tell which is which.

Wow Amanda your lack of plastic is amazing! It must be really hard especially since you travel so much. I did want to mention that those clear windows on envelopes from bills or junk mail aren't plastic but glassine. They're great for tooling gilding if you're an artist like me. :-) as I understand glassine, it's not plastic but a very thin treated paper that is archival and acid free. I'm not sure how they manufacture glassine but you can recycle as paper since that is what it is.

Happy to share -

I took this recipe from http://www.active.com/mountainbiking/Articles/Make_Your_Own_Homemade_Energy_Gel.htm

7 and 1/3 Tbsp honey
3/4 tsp blackstrap molasses
1/10 tsp table salt

Derek says: "The nutritional content approximates: 25g carbs, 45mg sodium, 35mg potassium"

I bought a container of "thick-it" which is mostly maltodextrin, which thickens liquids and also adds carbs without adding sugar, which is hard to achieve. I add it to homemade electrolyte drinks for long bike rides, but I have yet to try it in a gu recipe.

I got a squishy silicone bottle for Christmas to put it in - http://www.trailspace.com/gear/humangear/gotoob-bottle-3-oz./ Not totally plastic free, but I expect it to last for a while. Got mine from REI, but saw them for sale today at Wholefoods.

Would love to hear other athlete's ideas for homemade energy food / drinks!

Hey Amanda, will you share your recipe for homemade gu? What do you store it in while running?

I'm impressed how committed you were while traveling. Let us know how you do with the worms.
