Take the challenge. Collect your plastic waste (both recyclable and non) for one week or more. Then photograph, tally, and post it here. What can we learn about our habits and lifestyles by examining our waste? And what changes can each of us make to leave the planet a little less trashy?

I've had trouble finding canola oil without a plastic cap or in bulk, but I haven't scouted out Rainbow yet. Good suggestion!

Coconut oil is a good substitute in most recipes. The kind I usually buy comes in a glass jar with metal lid also. I use is sparingly, mostly because it is expensive and I bake a lot... too much...?

I have a follow up question. Earth Balance (a vegan margarine) can be purchased as sticks, and they are wrapped in a papery-foil wrapper. Do you happen to know if those kind of butter wrappers contain plastic?

Maybe you can switch to coconut oil, it is abit more pricey (at least it is here in Norway) but it always comes in glass and a metal lid. Ours does not even have the outer plastic seal.

Becca, Berkeley Bowl and Whole Foods have baking supplies, but what you can't find there you can definitely find at Rainbow Grocery. They have all kinds of cooking oils in bulk. Bring your containers.
