Take the challenge. Collect your plastic waste (both recyclable and non) for one week or more. Then photograph, tally, and post it here. What can we learn about our habits and lifestyles by examining our waste? And what changes can each of us make to leave the planet a little less trashy?

Thanks Beth, I hadn't thought of it! We have a guy at our farmers market that makes amazing fresh salsa which we buy regularly- this is the leading cause of our tortilla chip purchasing!

As far as buying cornmeal in bulk, I hate to admit but I'm a little wary. My celiac disease is very sensitive & cross contamination in the bulk bins (especially in the "grains" section) makes me nervous. Avoiding a "gluten poisoning" is number one in importance (unfortunately ahead of ALL else).

Hi Kristin. Have you thought of getting a tortilla press and making your own? If you eat a lot of tortilla chips, it might be worth it. They are all metal. http://www.surlatable.com/product/PRO-452797/Cast-Iron-Tortilla-Press

I don't think you actually need a press to make tortillas, but it makes it easier. You can get the cornmeal in bulk.

I haven't tried this myself. Danielle Richardet makes homemade tortillas, but I think hers are wheat flour.
