Take the challenge. Collect your plastic waste (both recyclable and non) for one week or more. Then photograph, tally, and post it here. What can we learn about our habits and lifestyles by examining our waste? And what changes can each of us make to leave the planet a little less trashy?

My boyfriend has developed a bit of an obsession with shaving culture in the last 6 months or so after several years of struggling with coarse hair coupled with sensitive skin. "Hamburger face" was a regular part of who he was until recently. He's mastered the safety razor and is getting more & more comfortable with his straightblade. I'll have to give his safety razor a try on Wednesday before I go back to work!

Hi Kristin, I know how you feel about the lack of recycling services. We live in a small town in Kentucky and it seems like the whole idea of recycling is just taking root here.

You have probably already checked RCBC's Recyclepedia for ideas on where to recycle stuff?

Congrats on the reversed condition. We could all use more of those, right? :O)

Hi Margaret. I've actually just been collecting the metal blades in a little box. I figure at some point, when I have enough metal saved up in my house, I'll take it all to a metal recycler. Did you know that in the old days, houses had slots built into the bathroom wall for disposing of metal blades? The blades just stay there in the wall and become part of the house. :-) http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/archive/index.php/t-223599.html

I also started using a metal safety razor. I think it works really well. I read some tutorials online to avoid cuts, and the main thing apparently is how much pressure you use, so I haven't cut myself once with it!

I also bought a used one, on ebay.

Although I liked the "lotion" strips on conventional razor blades (which I tried to research a little and it's pretty much all plastic), I just always shave at the very end of a shower, so the skin's soft from water, heat, and soap, and I don't have any issues with razor burn.

Beth, how do you dispose of the metal blades? I think my first one is just about used up.

Kristin, have you tried using the safety razor? That's what I use, and I really like it. I found mine secondhand at an antique store, believe it or not. I buy the blades in boxes of 100 from eBay:
