You could use a fabric ribbon tie your hair. After all these years, I bet they still work.

I use a pencil to put my hair up, too! Had never met anyone else who does.

I also have several beautiful dichroic glass hair clips from this glass artist that I just love using. Pictured at the upper left of her page, they are about 4 inches long and 3/4 inch wide. Reasonably priced at her shows. I don’t see an Etsy store, so you’d have to contact her directly.

Mary Katherine, I don’t know of any plastic-free hair elastics, but could a wood hair stick like these work for you? Is your hair long enough?

That’s what I started using, but I have to confess that my sister said it made me look like an old lady. Sometimes I just put my hair back with a pencil.
