List of plastic items REFUSED this week. (Yay!)
Ok, so my daughter just started back to school… plastic-free lunch… yes!
To share some things my daughter took were: pasta with marinara, PB&J, cinnamon apples, cranberries, homemade wheat thins, smoothie, french toast with maple syrup, pizza, salad, pistachios….and more :)
Bread: bought fresh from bakery or made
Out to eat: straws, condiment cups, take out containers
Total items collected: 10
2 gardein packages
1 cheese crackers package
3 produce ties
What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
Crackers: Going to make my daughter cheese crackers.
What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?
What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
This is my 52nd week collecting our plastic waste.
So, as I took my last picture of collected plastic waste, I asked my son what we learned and he said, “There sure is a lot of it [plastic].”
It’s true that we have not figured out how to be plastic-free. But, we are living with LESS. Less is better and for me that’s what this whole year has been about– getting to better.
I’ve learned how to make so many things and slowly we are changing the way we do things…. and with kids, I have learned… this takes extra time. Whereas I may be ready to refuse it all… my kids need a little more time. Time to learn… time to connect and the time to make the decision on their own. Change takes time, right?
Ok, so even though this is the last week in my 52 week commitment to show off my plastic waste… I’m not going to stop focusing on reducing our plastic waste. My new goal for this year is to share more of HOW we are using less plastic. I’ve already started by sharing everyday photos on Instagram and tagging them #lifewithoutplastic :) Now to put those into blog posts :) Also, I’m going to start doing a class at my local co-op on Plastic-Free Food! (BTW… that class is happening because of this challenge… thanks Beth!!)
Well… I think that’s it. Thanks to everyone that offered tips and suggestions to me throughout the year!! Here’s to another year with (even) less plastic!!
