Take the challenge. Collect your plastic waste (both recyclable and non) for one week or more. Then photograph, tally, and post it here. What can we learn about our habits and lifestyles by examining our waste? And what changes can each of us make to leave the planet a little less trashy?

Hi Emily. Welcome to the challenge. While I'm not familiar with what stores are available in Santa Cruz, I do know there's a Whole Foods there with bulk bins, and you can bring your own bags and containers. Almonds and rice are pretty standard in bulk bins.

As for razors, I actually use a metal safety razor that is plastic-free. You can buy them new, but I actually found mine at an antique store. Here's more information about it:

Do you have access to St. Benoit yogurt down there? Maybe call the company and see if they sell in Santa Cruz. It's made in Northern California and comes in returnable glass jars or ceramic pots.

Do you have a nearby farmers market? The vendors love to take back their plastic containers and baskets to reuse. You can't give them back at the store, but at a farmers market you can.

Hope these suggestions are helpful. Cheers!
