List of plastic items REFUSED this week. (Yay!)
plastic bags at stores, of course! At the grocery store, I wanted to buy some nuts from the bulk containers, but I hadn’t brought enough bags from home, so I had to pass.
Total items collected: 23
Total weight: 1 lb
plastic fork, beer cup, laundry detergent bottle, dish soap bottle, seedling pots, strawberry container
mesh onion bag, spinach/lettuce bags, toilet paper bags, coffee bag, coffee filter bag
What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
lettuce, onion, coffee filter
What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
Well, I am receiving help from the food bank, and so much of what I receive comes in plastic (the lettuce, spinach, strawberries, onions), and beggars can’t always be choosers. My thought is to start using baking soda for washing clothes, and to try to buy the dish soap in bulk even though it will cost more. Also, I went for the bigger tomato plants at the garden shop; they come in plastic containers as opposed to the little plants in the peat moss cups. This is because the spring weather has been quite harsh and I wanted to put in larger, hardier plants. An alternative would be to build a green house, which would probably use plastic sheeting to keep the cost down. I have ruminated on the idea of a small greenhouse box made from an abandoned window frame…Anyway, this week I hang my head in shame and vow to continue reducing.
