Plastic Challenge: Jeana Harris, Week 1

How can I eat salads and cereal without plastic?
Location:Boise, Idaho, United States
Name: Jeana Harris
Week: 1
Personal Info:
I’m a 19 year old female with one roommate. I’m vegetarian and a feminist.
List of plastic items REFUSED this week. (Yay!)
grocery bags
Total items collected: 28
Total weight:
Items: Recyclable
5 plastic utensils, plastic bags, milk bottle, soda can holder thing, cereal bag, ziplock bags.
Items: Nonrecyclable
motor oil containers, lids and straws, coffee cups, styrofoam cup, soy sauce packet,
What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
Coffee cups, plastic forks and spoons
What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
individual portioned sodas, milk, water etc.
What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
motor oil containers
What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
I need to start carrying my own reusable coffee cups, forks and spoons with me when I go out. I should refuse to put fruit and veggies in separate produce bags. I should store cheese and other items in containers instead of ziplocks.
What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?
I am willing to refuse produce bags.
What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?

I'm a fellow boisean, feminist, and vegan. Being aware of all the plastic when shopping or eating out is the first step, so good job Jeana! I reuse my winco plastic bags over and over again for bulk granola, pasta, etc..I have some zip lock baggies that are 20 years old!
Hi Jeana,
Your Question: "How can I eat salads and cereal without plastic?"
salads: grow your own or get them plastic free from the farmer's market
cereal: get it in bulk at winco, or whole foods store, and use cloth produce/bulk food bags, make your own (I make mine out of unbleached muslin) or buy them on etsy :)
Hope that helps! I'm only a month or so in to being plastic free, every day is a new challenge!
