Plastic Challenge: Eve Stavros, Week 25

Location:Charlottesville, Virginia, United States
Name: Eve Stavros
Week: 25
Personal Info:
I recently retired early and moved from Florida to Virginia, near the Blue Ridge Mountains. I’m fortunate to live in the basement apartment of my best friend’s beautiful log home, where I have time to garden, read, cook, play with my cat, Armani, and SLEEP! Living on a budget, but enjoying some travel – and most of all the time to enjoy the slow life.
List of plastic items REFUSED this week. (Yay!)
Straws, plastic cutlery, to-go containers, cups
Total items collected: 19
Total weight: 3.1 oz
Items: Recyclable
New: milk bottle cap & ring #4 (2), wine bottle cap & wrap #4 (1), heavy cream carton plastic caps & inserts (2), herring jar #1 (1) & lid (1)
Items: Nonrecyclable
New: envelope windows (5), cheese wrapper (1), meat wrapper (1)
Old: eye shadow applicator (1), frozen edamame bag (1) flower tea bag (1), tape scrap (1), netting scrap (1)
What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
Herring – should be able to find in glass jars
Eye shadow applicator – I’ve already replaced with a brush, this is just a very old one
Wine cap/cork – this was a gift bottle. I look for cork or metal tops
What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
Frozen edamame – my local market has it fresh when they’re in season
What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
Stupid plastic envelope windows!!! Need to reduce mail, period!
What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?
What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
