I am a second year student at UCSC and have completed this form/exercise as requested; it’s a part of my training to become a docent at the Long Marine Lab. I will most likely continue this challenge!
I try to reuse plastic bags and other disposable containers as much as possible, so the plastic that I have saved can’t really be used again.
List of plastic items REFUSED this week. (Yay!)
disposable plastic cups, plastic bags, styrofoam cups
Total items collected: 7
Total weight: 5 oz.
plastic container for cookies, milk container, juice boxes
What items can I easily replace with plastic free or less plastic alternatives?
Items that can be easily re-used, even if they are plastic themselves.
What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic free alternative doesn’t exist?
Bags for produce, shipping material
What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative?
Reusable water bottle, food already wrapped in plastic from the grocery store.
What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption?
Not ordering so many things that I need online, not buying beverages with disposable containers.
What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week?
What other conclusions, if any, can I draw?
