I wrote to the general manager and restaurant manager at Yoshi’s Oakland to ask if they would be willing to adopt an offer first policy for plastic straws in glasses of water. I’ve noticed that there is a plastic straw in every single glass brought to the table. Never mind all of the cocktails they serve. My e-mail was addressing the straws in water, specifically. He wrote me back within the hour and said that they “have recycling policies in place” and that Yoshi’s “cannot adopt an offer first policy”. Needless to say I’m extremely disappointed. He offered no explanation as to why not. Plastic straws can’t be recycled.
Any one else have any success contacting local businesses about this particular policy?
That’s very disappointing. This week, I’m going to publish a blog post about straw-free campaigns and a new toolkit for creating a straw-free campaign. Could you please email me at beth [at] myplasticfreelife [dot] com to discuss? I’d like to find out why Yoshi’s won’t do it.
