Venting my frustration into a solution

Ok, I’m gonna toot my own horn.

I started a blog. I’ve never blogged before, and it’s brand spanking new and a little scary, but it’s inspired by Beth and No Impact Man and my own frustration that living between the two coasts seems to constantly push me back towards plasticized consumerism.

I live in Pittsburgh. A city in the middle of the mid-atlantic, not quite mid-western, of an average population (not big, not small), who, on average, have a very average disposition towards plastic and resources and life in general. I’ve managed to find my way towards the local, plastic-free light a great deal using information already out there. But I keep thinking “gee, if I weren’t so incredibly ornery, I’d probably have given up by now because I don’t live in California or NY.”

It’s not that the change is hard, that I accept. It’s that we just don’t have the options touted so often by the coasts and big cities. We have other options, but there are no wildly popular blogs or books about them :D

So I thought I’d fill in a bit of the gap between the two coasts, at least to provide an example that you don’t have to live in the most progressive of big cities, or the middle of nowhere, or on a hippie commune in order to have a rich, full, plastic free and local life. And if nobody ever reads it, at least when I forget something I already figured out, I’ll have a record of it I can turn to :D

I’m working on a post about plastic in Pittsburgh, where it comes from, what we do with it, and who makes alternatives in the area. Like I said, I’m new at this, so it may be rocky and slow going at first. But I’ve got a supportive boyfriend, a Co-op, some mason jars, and a farmer’s market – I can figure out and post the rest as I go.

Oh – see, I’m really bad at this, I almost forgot to include the url. For now it’s at http://www.sustainablepittsbur…..dpress.com but if I can’t figure out how wordpress works, I may switch.

/end toot

thank you Beth for inspiring me!!! (and if you’ve got any advice, feel free to pass it on!)

Awesome idea! I don’t know if you know, but a while back I asked bloggers to join my blogroll as Plastic-Free Bloggers (for those whose blogs were mostly about plastic) or the Plastic-Free Posse, for those who also wrote about other things besides plastic. Here is the link to my Blogroll so you can see what I mean:

http://fakeplasticfish.com/blog-roll/

Anyway, I’ll be happy to add your blog to whichever one you want. And if you want to write a guest post on Fake Plastic Fish, I’ll happily link to your new blog. Maybe something about where you live and the challenges there.

See, I recognize that my blog is limited to my experience here in the Bay Area and that we need to hear voices from everywhere. So great! I hope you will keep it up!
