I was just sent a product called LunchSkins to review that are snack bag, sandwich bag, and sub bag sized reusable fabric containers to be used instead of plastic baggies. So far, so good and they are really cute. Can be washed 100’s of times apparently. The exterior is cotton, but, the lining is a food-safe polyurethane–is this a reasonable alternative to plastic baggies?

Personally, I don’t use LunchSkins because of the polyurethane, whether it’s food grade or not.  The FDA still allows BPA in “food grade” plastic, so to me, that label is meaningless.  I like Graze Organic or Three Little Birds bags because there is no plastic coating in them.  That said, they are not waterproof.  There are other ways of carrying sandwiches and snacks that would be leak proof.  Reused glass jars, stainless steel sandwich and snack containers, etc.

I’m not saying LunchSkins are bad.  I think we just don’t know enough about what chemicals are in plastics to know for sure that they are safe, you know?
