hello

i am looking to make a lettuce raft hydroponic system to grow my own lettuce, a vertical hydroponic system and then one day  full aquaponics system so I can raise fish and grown all my own plants.

The issue is that certain components of these are generally made from plastic and I am having difficulty finding alternatives. I worry about the plastic leaching into my crops and even affecting my fish, and I would rather a plastic free system.

So so for the lettuce raft, usually the raft itself would be made from styrofoam. I have found that apparently a wooden fixed raft would be fine as long as the water is regularly topped up, and the tank itself can be glass. However I can’t find an alternative to net pots or a pond pump and filter which isn’t made from plastic, any ideas?

the other two systems should really have just the pond pump as the main issue, as I can perhaps use recycled stone or stainless steel for the plant beds and the tank can again be made from glass. I’m looking to make the system as much out of recycled stuff (and cheaply hopefully) as possible but I really grudge using plastic in it at all.

Sorry for for any weird typing errors, the page keeps jumping up and typing in weird places for some reason haha.

This is awesome you are looking for plastic free alternatives. This is a problem I am putting time into. I will let you know if I ever come up with solutions.
