I’ll preface my post by first telling you that I am pale as pale can be. I have blue eyes, light hair and don’t tan – just lobsterize. I wore sunscreen religiously for years. Yet, I still burned. And to top it off, many of the chemicals and preservatives in sunscreen caused skin irritation. It made me wonder which was worse – the sunburn or the chemical induced rash.
So before I even cared about plastics or living a minimal impact lifestyle, I stumbled across a solution for my sunburn woes from my natural path while taking my husband in for an apt. He shared with us that olive oil, applied to the skin daily right after showering for 2 weeks before major sun exposure prevented sunburn. The idea is that the antioxidants and lipids in olive oil make your skin cells so happy and healthy that they are much less susceptible to sun damage.
I thought “gross” at first. But tried it. And sure enough, I spent all summer with only minimal sun burn (I’ll call it a slight rosing).
So starting about this time of year (I live in the northwest where the sun doesn’t shine bright all that much) I add a dispenser of olive oil to my shampoo and soap and diligently rub down after the shower. I wait about 1-2 minutes than pat down gently and get dressed as usual. There’s no smell, no grease, just smooth, soft skin.
Bonus – it replaces all my expensive lotions too.
Interesting. I burn in the sun very easily too. I found two natural sunscreens last year that worked and were not packaged in plastic: Avasol, which comes in a cardboard tube and Balm! Baby, which comes in a glass jar. They both contain zinc as the active ingredient but also several different oils. Here is my review of them:
But I will try the olive oil suggestion too. Sounds interesting.
