Exactly what we didn't need....more plastic bags being used by pet owners to pick up after their pets!!!

It appears to me that everyone with a dog uses plastic bags to pick up doggy poop. Plastic bags are provided at dog parks and at rest areas because it is required to pick up after your pet these days. It doesn’t seem to bother anybody that a plastic bag is being used for this purpose. There has to be a better alternative. I wonder how many bags are being used everyday for this and where they all end up, and what kind of impact this is having on our environment. I suppose too it could be argued that all these plastic bags is just as bad as the alternative. The dog parks I have gone to all need people to volunteer or hired to go around and use a shovel and perhaps a cardboard box to collect waste that was neglected to be collected after Fido’s daily …..well you know what I mean. I know I can’t be the first person to be concerned on this particular use of plastic that could be dealt with in so many other ways, you don’t even need to be very creative here. But it is just accepted as ok in our society today and perceived as, “the right thing to do,” to clean up after your pet. It’s the responsible thing to do so we just grab a plastic bag without thinking of the impact of the plastic. Maybe we are focused on just disposing of the poop as quick and easily as possible, and understandably so, but we need to change this very bad habit to a more healthy solution to our environment.

So does anyone have any statistics on the impact of plastic bags being used for this specific purpose has on our environment? Also, it would be interesting to hear what kind of solutions do you have for this problem? Because if you are like me, I love dogs and can’t imagine life without them. But I think we can do better than having something so detrimental to our planet be acceptable to use and readily available and convenient. That is obviously the human’s fault as I’m sure Fido would agree.

I would definitely be interested in ideas for this!  I have two very active pups.  While we are in our own yard, I have no trouble using a scooper and returning my pups’ gifts back to nature, but on a walk it is too difficult to handle that and both leashes.  Additionally, pups don’t usually just go once.  My older doodle will poop a few times on a walk while “working things out” so a scooper would be difficult to manage.

Anyone have any solutions that work for them?  I hate using bags and try to fill up a single bag as much as a can before grabbing a second one, but I would love a plastic free solution!

As a dog owner, I have been thinking about this. I am going to try waxed paper bags.

I have a dog walking business, so needless to say, I deal with doggie poop all day long. I just ordered Earth Rated waste bags that are biodegradable. You have to get the white bags, not the green bags. The white bags will break down within a year.
