We live in a rural area and when out walking or walking the mile into town we have to take a large king size pillow case with us to pick up all the plastic bags, food containers that either get tossed or accidentally get blown on to the road area.
Thankfully many of the roadways here in the Sierras have Adopt A Highway group who from now until fall will be walking the roads once a week to pick up the trash.
But visit a camp ground and you see hundreds of plastic bottles, food containers in the garbage cans. Often wonder of any of them get recycled. A few of us go visit on Sundays and go thru the bins and grab the bottles which on a good day can fetch us $25 at the recycling center. One Sunday we got enough plastic bottles from two camp grounds to fill ten 30 gallon homemade cloth bags.
I don’t know whether it helps, but I still do it. When walking my dog Olly along a waterway in the city, I pick up plastic and aluminium cans and put them in a bin further along the way. My neighbour Edda, also encourages her four young boys to do the same (to save the sea creatures). It seems depressing when there is so much plastic in the world. Since following this blog, I’m amazed at just how much is given to me (without my asking). I’m on my way to de-plasticising my life. I like it. It feels real to me. Canvas bags and glass bottles, no plastic lined tins (no phthalates), no cancer. Perhaps if we can all save one sea creatures by our actions, then it will be worth it.
